Safer roadways: 5 ways to avoid
distracted driving

We can all agree that distracted driving is dangerous — not only for the driver, but for other motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians. The consequences of an accident resulting from careless or distracted driving can range from a fender-bender, to much more devastating outcomes.

Roadway safety begins with an awareness and understanding of the responsibility of mindful driving. Being safe on the roads is our obligation.

Here are 5 ways to ensure that you eliminate the opportunity for distracted driving when you get behind the wheel:

Get comfortable before you go

  • Check your mirrors
  • Adjust your seat
  • Select your radio station and volume
  • Set the cabin temperature

Plan your route before you depart

  • Check a map before you leave to familiarize yourself with the route
  • Set your GPS before the vehicle is in-motion
  • Ensure the volume is loud enough that you’ll hear it so that you don’t have to adjust the volume en route

Eyes on the road — always

  • Avoid common interior distractions such as: the radio, temperature control gauges, a dropped item, etc.
  • Avoid common exterior distractions such as: billboards, storefronts, and other activities that takes yours eyes away from the road ahead and your immediate surroundings

Pull over when you can’t give driving your full attention

  • If you’re travelling with children and they require your attention, safely pull over rather than trying to address their needs while the vehicle is in motion
  • Similarly, if you have pets in your car, ensure that they’re safely secured — and if they require your attention, pull over.
  • If you’re feeling unwell, drowsy, or are having trouble concentrating, pull over and ask someone else to drive or call a trusted friend or family member to pick you up

Put your phone away

  • Talking and texting while driving is one of the most dangerous activities you can do
  • Always put your phone out of sight and out of reach while driving
  • If you can, turn off your phone while you’re driving or set it to do-not-disturb
  • If you need to take a hands-free call, it’s still best to pull over, as you won’t be able to giving driving your full attention

Road safety is a serious matter. Taking these steps to ensure that your full attention is on the road will help to reduce or eliminate the controllable distractions you’ll face while driving. Keep in mind that not all distractions are predictable. That’s why ensuring that your focus is on the road and your immediate surroundings is of paramount importance.
